The former Baltic Fleet lightship "Irbensky," permanently moored in Kaliningrad, has officially opened to the public as a museum. The newly established museum's exhibits are dedicated to lighthouses and lighthouse keeping.
According to Interfax, the Irbensky itself is unique—it is the last manned floating lighthouse built in the world. Built in 1962, it is currently the only surviving vessel of its type in Russia.
The lighthouse served for decades in the Irben Strait, the starting point of the Northern Fairway. The crew of 19 was housed in 13 cabins. With provisions and fresh water, the vessel's endurance was 50 days.
Visitors to the new museum can explore the lightship itself, its cabins, and the forecastle. The galley, living quarters, and other ship's spaces will soon be restored and open to the public.
