The last Friday before Christmas is traditionally one of the worst days to travel. British experts warn that those who don't leave before lunch will have to travel two to three times longer than usual to reach their destination, according to the Daily Star.
Friday, December 22, at In the UK, as in the rest of the Catholic world, this is the last working day before the Christmas holidays. And it's already been dubbed "Furious Friday." According to transport expert Dr. Graham Cookson, by lunchtime, most of the country's highways are at their peak. Traffic speeds on highways have dropped to a crawl. Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution and, if possible, avoid long journeys.
According to the expert, travel times to destinations could increase by two to three times. The worst situation is on the M25 motorway, the 188-kilometer-long ring road around London. Congestion also remains on the M6 between Merseyside and Staffordshire, the European M1 route from Larne, Ireland, to Seville, Spain, and the M4 from London to South Wales.
Those who choose to travel by public transport will also face challenges. Many major train routes are partially closed due to Network Rail's Christmas program.
Great Western Railway is urging passengers to get to their destinations no later than Saturday as London's major transport hub, Paddington, will be closed from December 25 to 27.
The Christmas holidays in the UK will last from December 25 to January 2.
