Egypt to Open New Sphinx International Airport This Summer

New Sphinx International Airport (SPX)) will open in Egypt this summer on the outskirts of Cairo, Ahram Online reports. citing the country's Minister of Civil Aviation, Sherif Fathi.

The new airport will serve tourists who want to visit the country visit the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) and the Great Pyramids of Giza.

The airport construction cost over 300 million EGP, and the contractor was the Egyptian Consultancy Company.

The decision to build SPX was made to relieve pressure on Cairo International Airport, which is located on the eastern outskirts of the capital.

The country's new air gateway has been dubbed the "300-passenger airport" due to its hourly throughput.

Incidentally, north of Cairo, the government is building another international airport, Katameya, to serve visitors heading to New Cairo and the administrative capital.
