Tips for tourists

Indira Gandhi International Airport

Delhi Airport Terminals

Indira Gandhi International Airport in the Indian capital is a massive, modern airport complex. Most flights arriving in Delhi are handled in Terminal 3, which has two giant wings—one for international and one for domestic flights.

Only a few small airlines (such as ndiGo and GoAir) use the old Terminal 1. Therefore, if you plan to continue your flight within India on a domestic flight, be sure to check the terminal before following the domestic flight signs.

Please note: Only passengers with tickets are allowed into the terminals. You will be asked to present your ticket or boarding pass, either printed or on a mobile device, upon entry. If you don't have a ticket but wish to enter the building, you must purchase an Entry Ticket (as of October 2017, it costs 100 rupees). The ticket office is located on the ground floor near the bus stops near columns 9 and 10.

It's best to arrive at the airport at least three hours before your flight, as check-in and baggage drop-off counters can take quite a while (the staff are very slow). Passport control can also have long lines, but everything moves much more quickly there.

How to get from terminal to terminal

A free shuttle bus runs between the terminals every 20 minutes. The stop is located near columns 9 and 10, under the overhead bridge leading to the metro.

Luggage storage at Delhi airport

For those who want to explore the city during a long layover, there is a left luggage storage facility near Terminal 3 – on the second floor of the airport, near the metro entrance.

To get to the storage locker, you need to take the travelator to the second floor (located between pillars 9 and 10), then cross the enclosed pedestrian "bridge" to the other side. It's easy to find—there are Left Luggage signs everywhere.

You can see the cost of the service in the photo (prices are valid as of October 2017).

The left luggage storage facility is located outside the main airport building. This means you don't need to enter the terminal to access it, and if you don't have an airline ticket, you don't need to purchase an Entry Ticket.

Currency exchange at Delhi airport

There are numerous currency exchange counters at Delhi Airport, located both in the departures and arrivals areas, near the baggage claim areas. Keep in mind that although the exchange rate listed is usually average, you'll receive less in cash due to a commission.

You can also use ATMs: they are located in the arrivals area after customs and the exit from the "clean zone" and in the departure hall.

Duty Free Shops at Delhi Airport

Duty-free shops are located both in the departure halls after passport control, and in the arrivals hall after passport control before baggage claim and customs.

In the international departures area, there are several shops with the usual selection of alcohol, cosmetics, and souvenirs. In addition to magnets, you can also buy gift sets for preparing Indian dishes, incense, and jewelry.

Alcohol is sold at prices similar to those in liquor stores throughout India, while souvenirs and food are much more expensive.

Next to the shops are two restaurants with a wide selection of alcoholic beverages. Further along, near the gates, there are no shops, only small cafes offering coffee, snacks, and sweets.

Airport Hotels in Delhi

The Holiday Inn is located in the airport's "clean zone." The entrance is located between the Duty Free shops. You can arrange accommodation by approaching the hotel representative's desk (in the corner of the check-in hall, past the domestic flights gate). Rooms can be rented for less than a day, but for a minimum of five hours. Sleeping for this amount of time will cost approximately 6,000 rupees.

There are also many hotels of various price categories located approximately 2-4 kilometers from the airport.

Other services at Delhi Airport

In the arrivals hall after customs, in the common area, there are kiosks where you can buy a local SIM card for local calls and internet access. Take advantage of this opportunity, as getting a SIM card in the city is much more difficult. Read more about how to buy a phone card in India here.
