Venice plans to introduce a "visit tax" for tourists.

Venice authorities are once again sounding the alarm: the city is being trampled by tourists. On a recent Easter Sunday, 125,000 people visited Venice—a huge influx of visitors that caused a real crush in the city: the streets were impassable, long lines formed at the sights, and public utilities were unable to clean up the tourists' trash quickly.

Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro believes that only tourists staying overnight in hotels or apartments should remain in the city, while those visiting for just a few hours are not interested in Venice. According to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, Venice intends to gain special powers and become the first Italian city to begin monitoring the number of visitors.

Luigi Brugnaro admits that it's technically impossible to bar tourists arriving by train, for example. However, in this case, city authorities are proposing to include a special tax in the price of train tickets to offset the "potential harm" caused by arriving tourists, or to impose a fee on all tourists visiting Venice on day tours—both as part of tour groups on buses and independently in private vehicles. This proposal is already under consideration by the Italian government.
