Barcelona-based CaixaBank committed more than €1.3 billion to hotel finance last year, and experts are confident that investment activity will only pick up in the near future.

CaixaBank Tourism Director, expert Helena Murano analyzed for Hotel Management which markets, including Spanish ones, are currently experiencing the greatest investment activity and why.
According to her, the bulk of investments today go to the Spanish market, as well as to the Caribbean. In Spain, the Balearic and Canary Islands, as well as the Costa del Sol region, attract the main attention of investors.
"Overall, I have the impression that the overall health of the investment sector and the level of development of the hospitality industry in the Mediterranean region are on the rise. The interest of institutional investors in resort-type assets has revived the market and improved the tourism indicators in the macro-region as a whole," the expert added.

Meanwhile, she believes that the biggest obstacles to investment growth in the Mediterranean are growing demand, rising prices and barriers to entry, including municipal planning and regulation.
When talking about what type of hotel or resort looks the most successful for investment, Helena Murano noted the following: “In our experience, the key to success is identifying or even developing a niche product that works within the brand, destination and segment.”
