For the first time in 72 years, the city council of the Italian capital has updated its rules of conduct for residents and visitors. Previously, some restrictions for tourists were temporary, but now they will be permanent, according to The Local Italy.
In particular, a fine in the amount of Fines of up to €150 for drinking alcoholic beverages in glass on the street after 10:00 PM and in any other container after midnight will be introduced year-round. Drinking alcohol after 2:00 AM is also prohibited in bars and clubs. These regulations were previously in effect temporarily until March 2019. Fines for eating near city fountains and swimming in them will also become permanent. Eating and drinking are also prohibited near many historical and cultural sites.
According to new regulations, tourists will no longer be able to take photos with centurions in central Rome. Authorities have banned people dressed as gladiators and other ancient Roman heroes from appearing on city streets. Police will fine anyone violating the regulations up to 400 euros.
Another drastic measure taken by the authorities is allowing city police to restrict anyone's access to certain city districts and public transportation. This rule can be applied to anyone deemed a potential threat to public order. For violating this restriction, police have the authority to fine the individual €900 and ban them from certain city districts for one year.
According to local authorities, most of the measures are aimed at countering the negative consequences of mass tourism. They are nothing new for Italy. Roman residents generally approve of the new laws.
