Starting May 1, Venice will introduce a new tourist tax, which will be included in the price of plane, train, and cruise ship tickets. This tax will not be paid by tourists who stay overnight in Venetian hotels, as the hotels will charge them a tourist tax.
The tax will be €3 in 2019, but will increase to €6-10 depending on the season starting in 2020, Interfax reports, citing The Guardian. And starting in 2022, tourists wishing to visit Venice will have to reserve their entry permit in advance. Those who fail to do so will face greater difficulties in entering Venice.
All these measures are aimed at controlling the influx of tourists that is literally suffocating Venice. The city welcomes 30 million visitors annually. The Venetian authorities have the most complaints about day-trippers: they bring little money to the city but leave behind mountains of trash. The funds raised by the new tax will be used to clean the streets.
