Tourists will start paying for entry to Venice this summer.

Venice's Mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, announced that the introduction of a toll for the historic city of Venice has been postponed from May 1 until the summer.

It should be noted that at the end of February, the Venice Municipal Council approved a resolution introducing an entry fee from May 1 of this year. to the city center.

The introduction of this tax was proposed due to the city's frequent "one-day" tourism, which does not require overnight stays in hotels. According to this proposal, travelers visiting Venice for just one day would be required to pre-book a pass. The cost of this pass would vary depending on the season: €6 during the off-peak season, €8 during the peak season, and up to €10 on popular days. For now, the mayor has proposed tourists use a "single ticket," which costs €3. This tax was originally slated to be introduced on January 1, 2022.

"The regulation definitely won't go into effect before May 1st. I think it will happen this summer, starting in June or July. I'd like to do it by summer, but it all depends on the carriers. There's no need to rush or do anything stupid. We need to discuss how to include the entry fee in the ticket. It should be clear at the time of purchase whether you're exempt from it. If you're staying in a hotel in Venice, you only pay the tourist tax," the mayor said, according to RIA Novosti.

Luigi Brugnaro also noted that introducing an entry fee into Venice would also help determine the precise number of incoming tourists.

It should be noted that it was previously announced that this fee would only apply to "one-day tourists" who do not stay in hotels and do not pay the tourist tax. Hotel guests, residents of the city and the Veneto region, homeowners in Venice, university students, and employees commuting daily from neighboring Mestre will be exempt from the entry fee.
