Russia has proposed increasing compensation for domestic air carriers on domestic flights. The All-Russian Passenger Association submitted a corresponding petition to the State Duma.
Let us remind you that new laws came into force in Russia on December 28, 2019. air transport regulations based on the decision of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to increase the limits of airline liability.
In the event of death or injury of a passenger, the maximum compensation amount will increase, when converted into ruble equivalent, from 9.9 million rubles to 11.2 million rubles. In the event of passenger delay, it will increase from 409,600 to 466,500 rubles. In the case of baggage delay, it will increase from 98,700 to 112,400 rubles. Compensation for cargo and baggage delay will increase from 1,700 to 1,900 rubles.
However, these amounts are approximate and will be calculated on a case-by-case basis. ICAO calculates compensation in a special currency used by the International Monetary Fund—the Special Drawing Right (SDR). The SDR currently trades at $1.37.
The association emphasized that these compensations, under the Montreal Convention, apply only to international airlines. On domestic flights within Russia, passengers can receive compensation of 25 rubles per hour of flight delay, and 600 rubles per kilogram for lost baggage due to the airline's fault.
