Japan Railways (JR) is actively rolling out free Wi-Fi on Shinkansen super-express trains nationwide. To the delight of tourists, it's already available to passengers on some trains on the Tohoku, Hokuriku, and Akita lines north of Tokyo.
Free internet access on public transportation is being prepared for the 2020 Summer Olympics, when a large influx of tourists to Japan is expected. By that time, all JR trains, including the Yamagata, Joetsu, Tokaido, Kyushu, and Hokkaido Shinkansen, are expected to be equipped with internet access, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization.
Free internet access is already available on all Toei bus routes. Other operators, including the Airport Express Limousine Bus and intercity buses, are gradually coming online. Internet access will also be available to passengers on the Tokyo Metro and Toei Line trains by spring 2020.
