Cannes has received 80,000 cubic meters of the purest sand to expand the popular beach along the Croisette embankment — enough sand to fill 32 Olympic swimming pools. The beach in Cannes is currently 1.4 kilometers long and only 20 meters wide. Thanks to the expansion, holidaymakers at the French resort will gain an additional 10-12 metres to the water's edge.
More than half of the sand was brought by boat from the neighboring Var department, Reuters reports. It is mixed with seawater and pumped to the shore, where bulldozers are forming a new beach. The resort authorities promise to finish all the work by the Cannes Film Festival, which will take place in May.
Local residents are not unanimous in their support for the initiative, with some questioning the wisdom of spending taxpayers' money on sand that could be washed away by the sea.
