Tourists warned about volcanic eruption in Kamchatka

On the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka began to show activity. This was reported by the regional volcanic eruption response team (KVERT) of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

"Shiveluch has started an eruption. Lava is flowing down the slopes," experts said.

Rescue services of the Kamchatka Territory recommend that tourists refrain from visiting the volcano and the surrounding areas in order to avoid accidents.

"Tourists are advised to refrain from visiting the volcano, which is located in the Ust-Kamchatsky District of the Kamchatka Territory. At present, Shiveluch is experiencing an extrusive-explosive eruption, accompanied by powerful steam-gas activity of the volcano with ash emissions and the collapse of hot avalanches," the statement says, TASS reports.

Experts also note that there are currently no tourist groups in the vicinity of the volcano, but there are suggestions that tourists can visit the volcano on their own. Therefore, the Ministry of Emergency Situations warns and calls on tourists to refrain from visiting the volcano.

"In the immediate vicinity of the volcano, the maximum permissible concentration of gas may be exceeded during steam and gas emissions. In addition, when approaching the giant, there is a risk of getting into an ashfall, which can lead to allergic reactions, ash getting into the mechanisms of cars and their failure," volcanologists said.

However, the head of the Kamchatka Volcano Station, Yuri Demyanchuk, notes that the cause of the volcano's eruption was the earthquakes that occurred in December of last year.

"It is very dangerous to be near a volcano, and even more so to climb it. It is impossible to escape even from small emissions, as they are accompanied by pyroclastic flows (a mixture of high-temperature volcanic gases, ash and rocks formed during a volcanic eruption) at a speed of 100-200 km/h," he said.
