Amsterdam may introduce a "bed tax" for tourists.

Amsterdam authorities have proposed introducing a "bed tax" of €3 per night for tourists staying in hostels and hotels.

"Amsterdam authorities are planning to introduce additional fees for travelers in the near future - a "tax" "The tax will be levied on tourists at a rate of 3 euros per night and will be in addition to the existing tax (7% on the total accommodation bill)," the FVW portal reports.

The publication also notes that the exact date for the new tax's introduction is currently unknown. It is planned that the proceeds from tourist accommodation fees will be used for the restoration of historic buildings, cleaning of parks and canals, etc.

In addition, Amsterdam authorities plan to ban tourist tours of the Red Light District from 2020 due to the large number of tourists who treat workers disrespectfully, in an effort to protect their rights.

As a reminder, it was previously reported that Malaysia's Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture introduced a bill to parliament regarding an exit tax for tourists departing the country on a scheduled flight or on a cruise ship.
