Greece aims to become a year-round tourist destination. The Ministry of Tourism is launching a long-term program to attract foreign visitors 365 days a year, according to Travel Daily Media.
The long-term plan includes expanding the high summer season, entering new foreign markets, promoting new Greek islands and resorts, developing thematic tourism products, and attracting investment.
The main focus will be on promoting cultural and health tourism. Religious and pilgrimage tours, as well as cruises, will also be actively promoted. Active recreation, including yachting, diving, mountaineering, and rock climbing, will receive a new boost. Greek gastronomy will play a special role in the new promotional concept.
The implementation of national and regional policies will be carried out by the Greek Ministry of Tourism in cooperation with other ministries, all 13 regions of the country, local authorities, chambers, tour operators and the private sector.
Tourism to Greece has been steadily growing over the past two years. In 2016, the country welcomed 28 million foreign visitors. According to preliminary data compiled from all official statistical sources, international arrivals, including cruise ships, are expected to exceed 30 million by the end of 2017, an increase of 91% (Table 3).
