Augsburg, Munich"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nI began this series with the gingerbread towns of the Alpine foothills, and I want to finish with sketches from the towns of the Bavarian plains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Petersplatz, Munich<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/d580b35686b2dfa06c9583ee489061dd.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><br clear=\"all\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Augsburg<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is the oldest city in Bavaria and currently the third largest. It was founded by the Romans in 15 BC during the reign of Emperor Octavian Augustus, to whom the city owes its name. For the city&#039;s 1600th anniversary, celebrated in 1594, a fountain was built in Augsburg&#039;s central square, crowning it. <strong>statue of Augustus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/d971591b978926c3a1aa8154ea8e08d0.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><br clear=\"all\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The same square also houses the City Hall, perhaps the most famous building in the city. It was completely destroyed during the war but was later rebuilt. The country was then divided into two camps\u2014Catholics and Protestants\u2014and religious wars erupted. Personally, I&#039;m particularly drawn to two places: the Viktualienmarkt, a huge food market in the city center, and the Alte Pinakothek with its magnificent art collection.<\/p>\n<p>On<strong> Viktualienmarkt<\/strong> You immediately understand how Bavarians love to drink beer. Erecting such &quot;trees&quot; during early summer celebrations is an ancient tradition dating back to pagan times.<\/p>\n<p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2c877003419d36709b66a4c279e9a4d6.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><br clear=\"all\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Famous <strong>Hofbr\u00e4uhaus<\/strong> \u2014 an incredibly large beer hall with a capacity of 4,000 people, visited by Mozart, the Bavarian kings, our own Ilyich, and Nazi leaders. In the morning, it&#039;s still practically empty.
