Japan has launched a discount program for tourists on the island of Hokkaido. This government initiative is aimed at attracting visitors, whose numbers declined following the September 2018 earthquake, NHK World Japan reported.<\/p>\n

The Japanese government is offering discounts. Tourists visiting the northern island of Hokkaido. The special Hokkaido Recovery Discount program applies to both domestic and international travelers. For foreigners, the government offers a 70% reimbursement for accommodations for stays of up to five days. The discount is not dependent on the number of rooms booked. Japanese tourists are offered 50% reimbursement for hotel accommodations in Hokkaido. The amount will increase if domestic tourists change their accommodations.<\/p>\n

Some areas of Hokkaido have gone even further. In the city of Biei, known for its stunning scenery and beautiful blue pond, travelers can get a coupon from a travel agency covering approximately $27 per person per day of hotel accommodation. The coupon is valid at 55 accommodations in the city.<\/p>\n

The Hokkaido Recovery Discount program was adopted by the Japanese government to restore tourism to the island following the major earthquake in early September. It will run until March 2019.<\/p>\n

Hokkaido's famous attractions include the country's largest national park, Daisetsuzan, home to Mount Asahidake, the island's capital, Sapporo, the Mikasa Museum Ship in Nara Prefecture, and many others.<\/p>\n
