In Europe, train passengers will be able to receive a full refund for tickets delayed by more than two hours, according to the European Parliament website.<\/p>\n

Members of the European Parliament have voted to increase compensation for passengers in the event of train delays. Thus, the compensation for delays of more than an hour will increase from 25% to 50% of the ticket price. However, passengers will retain the right to continue their journey or choose an alternative route.<\/p>\n

For delays of 1 to 2 hours, passengers will receive a 75% reimbursement of the travel cost. The full 100% reimbursement will be paid to passengers on trains delayed by more than 2 hours. If schedule changes result in a passenger missing their boarding on another train, they will receive a ticket for the next train at no additional cost.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, MEPs rejected proposals to exempt rail operators from compensatory payments in cases of "extraordinary circumstances." Another change will affect cyclists. Train passengers within the EU will be allowed to take bicycles on all trains, including high-speed, intercity, cross-border, and local trains. Special spaces will be allocated on new and refurbished trains for transporting assembled bicycles.<\/p>\n

The amended rules must now be approved by the EU Council before they become law. Experts believe this will happen in 2020. Currently, rail passengers in Europe can expect a maximum compensation of up to half the ticket price.<\/p>\n
