Tips for tourists

The resort town of Sitges

36 km from Barcelona is one of the most famous resorts of Catalonia, the town of Sitges.

Sitges was once a quiet fishing village with a church on the beach. Today, it is a small, historic town nestled in one of the bays of Spain's Costa del Garraf.

Since we were there at the end of October, in the off-season, parking was free.

Sitges is firmly among the top ten most visited youth resorts in the world. It is also known as the "Spanish Saint-Tropez."

Sitges has a reputation as a city of the arts. For over a hundred years, the city has hosted an annual carnival in February. The city is also home to the Catalonia International Film Festival, one of the most important film events in Europe.

There are many restaurants and cafes along the coast with sea views.

Since the 1990s, Sitges has been one of the centers of gay tourism in Europe. The town boasts a nudist beach.

The city's most famous landmark is the 17th-century Church of St. Bartholomew and St. Thecla.

In 2010, a TripAdvisor survey ranked Sitges 7th in the "Beach and Sun in Europe" category. This places Sitges among the top ten resorts in Europe. And according to Bruno Gmunder Verlag GmbH, an expert in gay tourism, Sitges is the best gay resort in the world.
