In the Spanish city of Cordoba (Andalusia), the traditional Patio Festival has begun, during which residents of old houses compete in decorating their courtyards. During the festival, the patio walls, floors, and windowsills of houses are literally strewn with pots of blooming geraniums and jasmine—crowds of tourists gather to admire the picturesque courtyards and take photographs.
According to Spain in Russian, the patio festival will last until May 14. Patios participating in the competition will be open to the public every day from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. An interactive city map showing the patios can be downloaded here.
The Festival of the Patios, listed by UNESCO as a Intangible Heritage of Humanity, has been held in Cordoba since 1921. Not only private homes but also historical architectural complexes, palaces, and churches participate in the event.
