Hawaii was covered in lava and ash.

The Kilauea volcano is erupting on the tropical Pacific island of Hawaii. Hot lava has already destroyed 26 homes, CNBC reported on Monday, May 7.

The eruption began on Friday, May 4, with an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale. It became The most powerful eruption in Hawaii in the last 40 years. As a result, the volcano's crater cracked and hot lava flowed out.

So far, no local residents have been injured. More than 1,700 residents have been evacuated. However, since it is still unclear when they will be able to return home, people are allowed to visit their homes to get essential items. According to local authorities, 26 residential structures in the Leilani Estates area have been destroyed. The river of fire continues to flow from the Kilauea vent. It is slowly moving northeast through residential streets, and the area has already reached 36,000 square meters. 

Kilauea Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It erupted in 1983. Experts warned of a possible powerful eruption as early as mid-April.
