In 2017, 800 thousand tourists visited Egypt in transit through Ukraine

Last year, 800,000 tourists arrived in Egypt via Ukrainian airports. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry announced this last week during a meeting with his counterparts from Ukraine, France, and Yemen, Al-Ahram Weekly reports.

"Negotiations on resuming direct flights between Russian airports and the Egyptian resorts of Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada have not yet begun; dates are being finalized. No invitations from the Egyptian side to inspect the resorts' airport terminals have yet been received. Provided a constructive approach, the first group of Russian inspectors will travel there in July-August. If the airports of Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh meet all the requirements in a timely manner and demonstrate a sufficient level of equipment and oversight in terms of aviation security, Russian air carriers operating charter flights there may return as early as this year. However, this may not happen before the fall, most likely by the start of the winter tourist season at Egyptian resorts," in particular, an Interfax source stated.

Depending on the results of the inspections, time will be required to agree on a number of formalities.

As a reminder, direct flights between Cairo and Moscow resumed on April 11 after a two-year hiatus.
