The ancient city of Soli Pompeipolis will open to tourists in 2019.

The ancient city of Soli Pompeipolis in Turkey's southern Mersin province will open to tourists next year after four years of excavations, reports Milliyet.

Excavations in the city began in 2015. The main archaeological work is taking place on the main street, decorated columns. Experts from around the world are working on the site.

During the time of the ancient Soli civilization, Pompeipolis was considered a major port city and held strategic importance. It also hosted the largest festivals in the history of the Roman Empire.

During the excavations, archaeologists discovered artifacts that could be classified as World Heritage, which will help promote tourism in the region.

Archaeologists and excavation initiators hope to restore the ancient harbor so that tourists can visit the site not only from land but also from the sea.

The ruins of the ancient port are still visible today – more than 200 meters of structures are located on the surface – these are two breakwaters.
