Florence's municipal police continue to heavily patrol the city center to prevent tourists from having impromptu picnics on the streets. Eight foreigners were recently fined for being caught eating on the steps of buildings.
The checks were conducted in Piazza della Libertà and Piazza Pier Vettori, which are always crowded, according to Italia in Russian. All detained tourists were fined 160 euros each for violating the ordinance banning "resting" on the steps and under the walls of historic buildings.
As a reminder, Florence authorities have adopted several measures to limit tourist congestion and make the streets more comfortable for travel. For example, the steps of churches, popular tourist spots, have been sprayed with water to discourage visitors from sitting on them. Florence Mayor Dario Nardella stated on local radio that the authorities do not want to create unnecessary inconvenience for travelers, but rather want to improve the city's historic center.
