An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck the Dominican Republic, the Russian Foreign Ministry's Situation and Crisis Center (SCSC) reported on Sunday, Interfax reported.

"An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 occurred 8 km from the village of Villa Elisa "In the north of the island. According to preliminary reports, there are no damages or casualties," the DSCC said in a statement.
Villa Elisa is a small town near the popular tourist resort area of Puerto Plata.
