Most major US and Canadian airlines have increased baggage fees on flights within North America over the past month. This is the first such increase in eight years, according to Travel.ru.
Delta, United Airlines, American Airlines, JetBlue, Air Canada, and WestJet, among others, have implemented increases. The increase is identical—$$5 for the first and second baggage allowance. The final prices are also almost identical.
The first piece of checked baggage in Economy Class now costs $30 on all of these carriers. The second piece costs $40 ($50 on flights between the US and Canada and within Canada, except on American Airlines). The third piece costs $150.
In some cases, checked baggage remains free. This applies to passengers connecting on a single ticket to or from long-haul international flights (only if checked baggage is free on those flights), passengers in preferred travel classes, and passengers in certain elite tiers of loyalty programs of American and Canadian airlines or their alliance partners. In particular, members of elite tiers of SkyTeam alliance loyalty programs (including Aeroflot Bonus) can still carry one free checked bag on all Delta flights.
Of the major North American carriers, only Southwest Airlines does not charge baggage fees. The airline allows all passengers two free checked bags and has stated that it has no plans to impose baggage fees.
