Kyoto to introduce tourist tax

A special tax will be collected from tourists visiting the Japanese city of Kyoto and staying in hotels. According to the decision of the Kyoto authorities, the collected funds will be used for the development of the city's infrastructure.

As Interfax reports with reference to the NHK World portal, all guests of hotels, guest houses and hostels in Kyoto will have to pay from $1.8 to $9 per day depending on the category of accommodation. Schoolchildren and students, as well as their accompanying persons, are exempt from paying the tourist tax.

Kyoto is expected to earn US$45 million a year from tourists this way. The tourist tax is already levied in two Japanese cities – Tokyo and Osaka.

Japan is becoming increasingly popular among tourists from Russia. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, the tourist flow from Russia to Japan increased by 30% in the first six months of 2018.
