Last week, the media reported that the Emirates required tourists to obtain permission to import medicines before traveling. However, as the UAE Ministry of Health explained, the rules for importing medicines have not changed significantly.
For travelers, who need to bring psychotropic or other prescription drugs (prohibited under customs regulations) to or through the UAE (in transit) for personal use must first declare them. This can be done on the UAE Ministry of Health page - at this link (http://www.mohap.gov.ae/en/services/Pages/361.aspx). First, you need to create an account on the Ministry of Health page, registering as an individual. And then upload prescriptions and medical documents to the system.
Deputy Head of the Department of Public Health and Licensing Mr. Amin Hussein El Amiri reminded that drugs can be declared directly upon arrival at Dubai airport, as was the case before.
"The only change is a fully electronic remote process for such declaration. It is not mandatory to use. Tourists can also present documents at the airport. However, the new service is very convenient," said Mr. Amin Hussein El-Amiri.
According to the rules, to import narcotic and psychotropic drugs to the UAE, you must have a doctor's prescription from a state-licensed clinic translated into Arabic or English and certified (both the original and a copy of the prescription), documents certifying permission for personal use of the drug. It is also worth considering that the amount of the drug should not exceed 30 daily doses indicated in the prescription.
Also, according to the rules, medicines and their components must not be on the list of substances listed in Chapter IV of the UAE Narcotic Substances Law as amended in 1995 and in the special lists of the UAE Ministry of Health (CDA and CDB lists). The imported volume of such drugs must not exceed a three-month course.
