Late-night drinking and costumed centurions are banned in Rome forever.

The Rome City Council has passed several laws regarding the behavior of residents and tourists on the streets. Specifically, drinking alcoholic beverages in glass containers outdoors after 10:00 PM is now completely prohibited, and drinking alcohol on city streets after midnight is completely prohibited. Even drinking in bars and nightclubs is prohibited after 2:00 AM.

Violators will be fined €150, and the owners of establishments where alcohol was purchased outside of these hours will be fined €280, The Local reports. Previously, these anti-alcohol measures were temporary.

The temporary ban on impromptu picnics near landmarks has also become permanent, as has the strict ban on swimming in fountains. Eating and drinking are prohibited not only near fountains and monuments, but also on the steps of the recently restored Spanish Steps. 500 police officers patrolling the city center will enforce all restrictions.

Rome authorities heeded numerous complaints from tourists and banned centurion costumes from appearing on the city streets. Costumed "Roman military leaders" persistently solicited photos with them and extorted money even for casual shots. Now, street performers appearing in centurion costumes will be fined 400 euros. This law also replaces previously adopted temporary measures.
