Tourists face 6 years in prison for stealing sand in Sardinia

A French couple faces up to six years in prison for stealing 40 kg of sand from a Sardinian beach.

 

 

"A French couple traveling from Sardinia to France by car were detained with 40 kg of sand from the beach. They face six years in prison for the theft," reports Independent portal.

Incidentally, collecting white sand from Sardinia's beaches is prohibited. Violators face a fine or a maximum penalty of six years in prison.

As the publication notes, the tourists were unaware that this practice was prohibited and were unaware that they were committing a crime.

"Sardinia's beaches are one of the island's main attractions. They are threatened by erosion due to climate change and sand theft," explained Sardinian environmental scientist Pierluigi Cocco.
