Russian tourists are safe in the Maldives despite political unrest, Maya Lomidze, executive director of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR), told Interfax-Tourism on Tuesday.

Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen announced On Monday, a 15-day state of emergency was declared in the country amid the escalating political crisis. The government, however, assured that the safety of all Maldivians and foreigners living on the archipelago would be ensured.
"According to tour operators, there have been no complaints or appeals from tourists vacationing in the Maldives; they are not in any danger. Tours are also being sold as usual," said M. Lomidze.
The Republic of Maldives is a small island nation located on a group of atolls in the Indian Ocean. The country's population is approximately 395,000. In 2017, the Maldives was visited by approximately 62,000 tourists from Russia, making it one of the most popular luxury beach vacation destinations for Russians.
