Boracay Island is welcoming tourists again.

Philippine authorities reopened Boracay Island to tourists on October 26. Importantly, the island will now accommodate up to 6,000 tourists per day, up from the previous 19,000, CNN reports.

As a reminder, Philippine authorities closed the island to tourists for six months on April 26. The large influx of tourists has caused severe environmental damage. Consequently, President Rodrigo Duterte has decided to temporarily close the island to tourists. "I will hold you accountable to the fullest extent of the law for your negligence, which has turned Boracay into a fishing pond and a sewer," Duterte said. "Either you clean it up, or I will close it forever. The time will come when foreigners will no longer travel there," he explained.

For six months, waste removal work was carried out on the island, and sewer systems in hotels were upgraded. In addition, new rules and regulations for tourists were introduced.

In addition, Philippine Tourism Minister Berne Romulo-Puyat hopes that the resort, previously recognized as the best beach, will regain its title due to its transformation.

The first tourists have already arrived on the island, Izvestia TV reports.
