Beaches of Anapa and Gelendzhik are closed for swimming

The Anapa authorities have banned swimming on the resort beaches due to the water temperature in the sea being too low. The city's Civil Defense and Population Protection Department asks vacationers not to put their lives in danger and to tighten control over children and the elderly.

As Interfax reports, the drop in sea water temperature to 13-15 degrees is caused by upwelling — the rise of deep cold waters to the surface. This is the second instance of a ban on swimming in Anapa for this reason since the beginning of summer.

According to experts, the optimal temperature for swimming should be above 20 degrees. Adults are advised to enter the sea at a temperature of at least 18 degrees. In colder water, a swimmer may experience cramps.

In addition, swimming is prohibited on almost all beaches in Gelendzhik. The probable cause was an accident in the sewer system, which caused wastewater to flow into the sea. Tourists complain about an unpleasant smell on the coast and about beaches that have been closed for several days. The fact of an accident at one of the city's sewer stations was confirmed by the director of the Gelendzhik water utility, however, according to him, "patrolling of the coast has been organized to prevent wastewater from flowing into the bay."
