Security measures have been tightened at the entrance to the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona's most popular landmark. Tourists must now undergo security screening similar to those at airports.
Separate security scanners are intended for individual visitors and tourists in tour groups, Interfax reports, citing El Pais. Furthermore, the cathedral has been equipped with more cameras tracking visitors' movements and transmitting data to a facial recognition system. The cathedral's security staff has been increased by 12 people. All these changes cost the monument's management 2 million euros.
Previously, visitor screening was carried out manually. Knives, air guns, and pepper sprays were repeatedly confiscated from visitors to the cathedral. Thanks to the new security system, tourists have been able to enter the Sagrada Familia more quickly—a welcome development for visitors during the peak tourist season.
