Only a few thousand VIM-Avia passengers who purchased not only plane tickets but also flight delay insurance will be eligible for compensation from AlfaStrakhovanie. The first clients have already received compensation, and the total amount of VIM-Avia payments could exceed tens of millions of rubles.
VIM-Avia flights and passenger transportation were suspended from September 27, 2017; passengers whose departure dates had not yet arrived were asked to return their tickets.
According to the Ministry of Transport, on the day when serious problems with the evacuation of tourists who had purchased VIM-Avia tickets began, there were approximately 40,000 tourists and passengers of the company outside Russia with departure dates up to October 29.
But all of the airline's passengers were evacuated: from September 26 to October 8, 2017 alone, more than 36,000 people were transported on domestic and international flights, of which 5,000 were transported by foreign airlines, 17,500 by VIM-Avia, and the remaining passengers by other Russian air carriers.
By October 12, AlfaStrakhovanie had already received more than 50 claims for payment from the company's clients who had insured themselves against flight delays and purchased tickets on VIM-Avia flights.
