The EU plans to test tourists with lie detectors.

An artificial intelligence (AI)-powered lie detector at the EU border will help identify tourists crossing the border with fake passports and those who lie about the length of their stay.

As reported in the Kommersant newspaper, EU authorities and national police Hungary has already launched a six-month pilot project, iBorderCtrl, a virtual lie detector powered by artificial intelligence. Testing will take place at the borders of Hungary, Greece, and Latvia.

Photos of passports, visas, income certificates, or financial guarantees provided when applying for a tourist visa will be uploaded to the iBorderCtrl program.

Thus, when crossing the EU border, tourists will be required to answer several questions, and the system will scan facial expressions and microexpressions (involuntary facial expressions) that appear when attempting to conceal information or suppress emotions. If a tourist is suspected of lying, they will be required to undergo additional verification—biometric identification (fingerprint scanning)—or answer questions from a border control officer.

During the initial stages of the study, the system identified more than 751 people attempting to cross the border fraudulently. The developers are currently working to improve the system to increase this figure to 851 people.
