
The new Russian Railways Museum, boasting a rich thematic collection, opens on November 1 in St. Petersburg. The 57,000-square-meter museum building was purpose-built on Bibliotechny Lane next to the Baltic Station.
As Fontanka reports.According to [the source], the new institution will be the largest railway museum in Europe and one of the largest museums in St. Petersburg. Exhibits from the Steam Locomotive Museum, formerly located behind Varshavsky Station, have moved to the new "home." Visitors will also be treated to a fascinating multimedia exhibition.
In total, the new Russian Railways Museum features 28,000 exhibits, 117 locomotives and carriages, 150 electronic information kiosks, and 38 multimedia installations. For example, a special electronic frame that runs alongside a vintage steam locomotive allows visitors to explore its interior. In addition to the equipment, the museum also features other railway-related exhibits, including figurines of passengers and station staff with which visitors can take photos, photographs, documents, and items from everyday railway life. There's also a locomotive cabin simulator, allowing visitors to experience the role of a train driver. The simulator offers six scenarios.
The Russian Railways Museum will be open free of charge until the end of 2017. Opening hours are Wednesday through Sunday.
