A state of emergency has been declared in Sri Lanka.

In the island nation of Sri Lanka, clashes between Buddhist and Muslim communities continue, and after several days of unrest, the country's authorities have decided to declare a state of emergency.

According to Interfax, the restrictive measures have been imposed for ten days to "take strict measures" against those provoking intercommunal clashes. Earlier on Monday, a curfew was imposed in the major Sri Lankan city of Kandy due to unrest.

Conflict between the two communities has been flaring up for the past year, with Buddhists accusing Muslims of forcing people to convert to Islam and destroying Buddhist archaeological sites.

The Federal Agency for Tourism (Rostourism) urges Russian citizens currently in Sri Lanka or planning a trip to the country to heed this information. Rostourism also recommends that tour operators serving this destination inform their clients of the unfavorable situation in central Sri Lanka.
