The section of the Sokolnicheskaya Line closest to Moscow's Vnukovo Airport will be closed for eight days. From Saturday, July 13, to Saturday, July 20, trains will only run to the Universitet station, reports Travel.ru.
This will seriously impede metro travel to Vnukovo Airport during the peak summer season. Passengers who do decide to use the Sokolnicheskaya Line will have to first take the free KM shuttle from Universitet to Salaryevo and then transfer to bus 911 to the airport (or transfer to the less frequent route 611 at one of the preceding stations). Furthermore, the heavy use of KM shuttles may hinder travel along Vernadsky Prospekt and Kievskoye Shosse.
The best alternative is the recently opened Solntsevskaya Line—you can take it to the Rasskazovka terminus and transfer there to bus number 32. This option, which typically takes 15-30 minutes longer from the city center, is likely to be the fastest and most convenient.
However, before using it, you should ensure that there are a significant number of Type 32 buses on the line: Mosgortrans typically removes many buses from other routes to accommodate the KM replacement shuttles. However, no announcements have been made regarding the reduction of buses on other routes. To check for the presence of Type 32 buses on the line, it's best to use one of the online transit services, such as Yandex.Transport.
It is not yet known whether Mosgortrans will make any additional changes to the route network in the airport area during the metro closure. Unfortunately, the Moscow transport system still lacks coordinated and advance notification of upcoming service changes between various carriers. Drivers and taxi customers should also check the traffic situation on the Kiev Highway and use alternative routes if necessary.
The closure of part of the Sokolnicheskaya Line is due to construction of the Big Circle Line, which will open in a few years. Once its southern section is open, connections between Vnukovo Airport and the south and southeast of Moscow will be dramatically improved, as will connections between Domodedovo Airport and the south and southwest.
