Construction has begun in Sharjah on a 27-kilometer bicycle path that will connect the emirate with its two neighboring emirates, Dubai and Ajman.
The project was developed by the Sharjah Urban Planning Council and consists of two stages: the first will include cycling and running tracks paths along the most popular embankment of the emirate of Al Majaz, on the second - a cycling and running track was created along the Al Muntazah road to the border with Ajman and towards Dubai, to residential areas and Al Mamzar Park.
According to the authorities, the track, which is suitable for running and cycling, will create additional opportunities for residents and visitors of the emirate to lead an active lifestyle and engage in sports.
Popularization of a healthy lifestyle and creation of comfortable conditions for citizens and tourists is one of the main tasks of the Sharjah government. Last year, the construction of several parks and recreation areas with sports grounds, play areas for children, shops, restaurants and walking paths began in the emirate.
New projects by the Sharjah Urban Planning Council include the construction of modern pedestrian bridges equipped with lifts for the elderly and disabled, and high-tech bus stops with air conditioning and electronic displays.
In 2012, Sharjah joined the World Health Organization (WHO) Healthy Cities program to promote healthy lifestyles. In 2015, WHO named Sharjah the “First Healthy City in the Middle East” for its contribution to the development of public health and improving social living conditions.
