Tips for tourists

On the edge of the crater of the active volcano Erta Ale

So, those who hadn't fallen asleep from exhaustion mustered their last strength and set out on the final trek to the lava lake. The guide was also exhausted, so he sent us on our own. We descended the wall of the large outer crater and, using headlamps to light the way, walked straight across the crunchy lava toward the lake. There was no longer any path here. Fifteen minutes and we were there.

To say it was incredibly beautiful is an understatement. It was ULTIMATE SCIENCE FANTASY, another planet or our own, but four billion years ago. It seemed as if we were seeing the beating heart of our Earth.

Yes, it was hot at the edge of the lake.

The fatigue vanished. I wanted to keep shooting. When I approached the very edge of the cliff and set up my tripod, I had to hide my face behind the camera; otherwise, it would be too hot and my eyes would sting from the flying, hot sulfur particles.

The girls are sunbathing 🙂

My head was spinning due to fatigue. A thunderstorm was raging behind us. It's a good thing Seryozha had the foresight to go to the other side of the lake and photograph the lightning against the crater:

At 02:00 we returned to camp, the three of us collapsed into one of the huts, set the alarm for 04:30 and fell asleep.

It took a lot of effort to get up, but we had to go photograph the volcano at dawn. No one went except Nastya and me.

It was getting light.

A couple of the 10 soldiers guarding us woke up and came down to us.

It's time to launch the quadcopter!

The experiment with mounting the Olympus to the Phantom failed this time. So, the photos and videos are only from the GoPro Hero 3.

This is what happened:

It was already quite light, and we went back to our huts to have breakfast and sleep.

Someone hasn't been to the volcano yet. But no matter, there's still another night ahead.
