Asia is shaking and flooded: sad news from Indonesia and Thailand

On Sunday, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Indonesian islands of Lombok and Bali. Reuters reports that more than 90 people were killed. However, the death toll could be higher, as rescue operations are still ongoing.

According to local authorities, as a result About 200 people were injured in the natural disaster. Hundreds remain in hospitals. Thousands of homes were destroyed.

The earthquake's epicenter was located at a depth of approximately 30 kilometers near Loloan, in northern Lombok. The tremors were also felt as far east as the neighboring island of Bali. Two people died there, according to rescuers. The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism issued a statement saying no tourists were injured. Airports on both islands are operating normally. However, according to photos online, ceiling tiles have fallen off at Bali's airport. 

According to CNN, the earthquake began in the evening, after sunset. It was the second to strike Lombok in a week. Earlier, on Sunday, July 29, a magnitude 6.4 tremor killed dozens of people and led to a ban on visiting the volcano's slopes.

Meanwhile, alarming news is coming from Thailand. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry's Crisis Center, more than 70,000 people have been affected by floods caused by heavy rains. The disaster affected nine northeastern provinces of the country. Nakhon Phanom was hit hardest, with the Mekong River overflowing its banks and inundating more than 12,000 households in 12 districts.
