The winter season has begun in the Murmansk Region. Local authorities plan to attract tourists with ski slopes, the northern lights and igloo houses. This is reported by the official portal of the regional government.
The Murmansk Region government conducted an operational meeting dedicated to the beginning of the winter tourist season. According to Governor Marina Kovtun, the popularity of the region among tourists has been growing in recent years. This concerns not only Russians, but also guests from foreign countries.
As Olga Kuznetsova, Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneurship Development of the Murmansk Region, noted, tourists primarily come to see the northern lights. A unique accommodation facility is planned to open 42 km from the regional center — igloo houses with panoramic windows for observing the glow of the upper layers of the atmosphere.
To see the northern lights in the Murmansk region, we recommend going to Teriberka. You can get to this city from Murmansk by bus. It is worth keeping in mind that public transport only runs on odd days, and in winter the road is often covered with snow. Travel time is about 4 hours. Several recreation centers are available for tourists in Teriberka.
In addition, you can enjoy the incredible natural phenomenon from the Khibiny Mountains, located south of Murmansk, as well as in the cities of Vidyaevo and Pechenga. The best time to observe the northern lights is a frosty clear sky from late autumn to late spring. Experts note that the most frequent green-blue lights can be seen in February.
A large number of tourists come to the region to go skiing. Thus, during the last New Year holidays, about 20,000 people visited the ski slopes of Kirovsk and Apatity. In total, 330,000 tourists visited the Murmansk region in 2016.
