Opening date set for new Istanbul airport

The new Istanbul airport, which claims to be the largest in the world, will open in October 2018, according to Lonely Planet.

The first phase of construction of Istanbul's new airport is nearing completion. The grand opening is scheduled for October 29. By this time, three runways and a terminal with a capacity of 90 million passengers per year will be in operation.

Upon completion of this ambitious project, which will be implemented in four phases, the airport will have six runways. The airport will connect Istanbul with 300 destinations, and its terminals will be able to handle up to 200 million passengers per year.

Another feature of the new airport is the Control Tower—an air traffic control tower shaped like a tulip, a symbol of Istanbul for centuries. The architectural style of the passenger terminals will reflect the artistic richness of the ancient city's historic structures.

Construction of the airport, 35 kilometers from Istanbul, began in 2013 due to the lack of expansion capacity at the two other hubs. The city's main airport, named after Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, is reportedly outdated and severely overcrowded. After the new airport opens, the old airport is planned to be converted into a public park, the "Garden of the Nation."

As of the end of 2017, Atlanta Airport was the busiest airport in the world, handling over 104 million passengers annually.
