Vietnam will open a new airport near Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, according to Vietnamnet.
In Vietnam's northeastern province of Quang Ninh, construction of the new Van Don International Airport is nearing completion. Since October, specialists have been conducting preliminary tests of the facility, with the first flight scheduled for December 25, 2018. Van Don Airport covers 288 hectares. Its highlight will be its sail-shaped terminal. The airport plans to handle approximately 2.5 million passengers annually.
The airport's construction aims to elevate Quang Ninh Province's status and transform Ha Long City into a world-class tourism and service hub. Authorities hope the airport will accelerate Ha Long's emergence as a national tourism destination and a driver of regional growth. By 2030, Quang Ninh Province aims to establish itself as a globally renowned destination offering a full range of marine and island tourism experiences.
The new airport is located 50 kilometers from the UNESCO World Heritage site and popular tourist destination of Halong Bay. This picturesque area is part of a national park and offers tourists exciting sea cruises, kayaking tours through grottoes, and cave tours.
