One of Thailand's islands has banned the import of plastic.

Tourists have been banned from bringing plastic bags to one of Thailand's most beautiful islands, Koh Samet, Khaosod English reports.

Authorities on Koh Samet Island in the Gulf of Thailand have banned the import of plastic bags since November 1. According to a local decree According to the government, tourists must remove all bags from their suitcases and bags before arrival. Violators face a fine of 1,500 baht (approximately £1,400). Residents of Koh Samet are also required to use eco-friendly bags, such as cloth bags and reusable paper bags. Local authorities have promised to distribute eco-friendly bags and packaging to guests free of charge. Styrofoam boxes and plastic containers have also been banned on the island.

The Thai island is visited daily by approximately 1,500 tourists, who bring back nearly 12,000 plastic bags of various sizes. This has a serious environmental impact on the area, affecting the island's wildlife and vegetation, and continuously destroying its ecosystem, the government noted.

Koh Samet Island is located in the Gulf of Thailand, 85 kilometers from Pattaya. It is part of the Khao Laem Ya National Marine Park. The island is famous for its white beaches, crystal-clear sea, and tranquil lagoons with clear waters. Koh Samet is a favorite destination for divers and lovers of a relaxing beach holiday. It is also a popular destination for ecotourism enthusiasts, who enjoy the beautiful forests with their rich flora and fauna.

Another popular island, Koh Samui, is currently planning to ban plastic straws and launch a recycling campaign. By 2021, the entire country aims to be free of imported hazardous waste.
