Foreign planes may start flying on domestic Russian routes

Foreign airlines will be allowed to carry passengers within Russia during the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov recently announced this.

The head of the Ministry of Transport noted that foreign air carriers will receive permits for Flights between Russian cities will only be operated if domestic carriers are unable to transport all interested parties. Applications from carriers that would bring fans to Russia on charter flights will also be considered.

According to M. Sokolov, between 3 and 5 million football fans are expected to arrive in Russia for the 2018 World Cup matches. Russian airlines' fleets can carry up to 10 million people. The minister also noted that no foreign airlines have yet requested domestic flights within Russia. Aeroflot is currently known to operate approximately 401,000 of these flights.

It was also reported that the Ministry of Transport is considering limiting airfare prices during the FIFA World Cup. Similar measures were taken during the 2014 Olympic Games.

As a reminder, the FIFA World Cup matches will be held from June 14 to July 15, 2018, in 11 Russian cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Saransk, Rostov-on-Don, and Yekaterinburg.
