The world's most dangerous mountain road will open to tourists in Turkey, according to the Anadolu Agency.
In northeastern Turkey, local authorities plan to launch tourist trips along the world-famous Derebaşı serpentine road. Several years ago, it was recognized as The most dangerous mountain road in the world. The serpentine road is located on Mount Sangali, which rises 3,500 meters above sea level. The mountain pass connects the Turkish provinces of Trabzon and Bayburt. The road has 13 hairpin turns.
Some sections of the highway are reportedly considered even more dangerous than the infamous "Death Road" in Bolivia. Drivers often encounter fog, landslides, rain, snow, and avalanches on the serpentine road. In winter, the road is closed for six months.
According to Ali Ayvazoğlu, Director of Culture and Tourism for the Trabzon Province, driving on the Trabzon-Bayburt road, which includes the Derebaşı serpentine, is dangerous at any time of year. He also noted that this is one of the most picturesque mountainous regions in Turkey, making the drive a truly unforgettable experience for travelers. Local authorities are currently working to develop the region's tourism infrastructure and are preparing to organize tourist trips along the serpentine road. Rock climbing and off-road vehicle competitions are also planned.
Besides Derebaşı, Turkey has another dangerous road. The Bird's Nest serpentine road is part of the route connecting the country's Mediterranean region with its central Anatolian region. Recently, Turkish authorities drilled several giant tunnels along the 60-kilometer route to make travel safer.
