More than 1,500 Russian tourists are stranded on the Chinese resort island of Hainan. IrAero, the airline operating flights for the tour operator Pearl River, announced the suspension of its flight schedule from Russian cities.
IN On Monday, December 10, representatives of Rostourism, the Ministry of Transport, and the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) are discussing the situation with transporting tourists home from China. As Rosaviatsia head Alexander Neradko told Interfax, the tourists need to be repatriated immediately, and then all financial matters will be resolved.
Previously, the airline's representatives attributed the flight cancellations to the tour operator's outstanding debt. According to A. Neradko, Pearl River was underpaid by $2.3 million for the flight. The tour company, in turn, claimed it had no outstanding debts to either the airline or its agent, Everate, through which payments were processed. The real reason, according to its version, was a technical malfunction of the aircraft, which led to a schedule disruption.
The press service of Rostourism also reported that stranded tourists will be able to fly home on Tuesday, December 11. The tour operator has extended their hotel stays for the Russians. Rostourism is working with the Chinese side to develop a roadmap for the return of Russians from Hainan.
IrAero has promised to take all necessary measures to transport 360 passengers from Haikou Airport to Kazan. They were scheduled to depart on Saturday, December 8.
Additionally, a flight to Ufa with 279 tourists was scheduled for December 11, a flight to Samara with 365 Russians on December 12, a flight to Khabarovsk with 44 passengers on December 13, and a flight to Chelyabinsk with 360 passengers on December 14. IrAero has not yet confirmed whether these flights will take place.
