In Hawaii, you can go to jail for taking photos of hot lava.

Authorities in Hawaii (USA) have toughened penalties for tourists taking selfies with an erupting volcano and lava flows in the background. Dozens of tourists and locals have been arrested on the Big Island in recent weeks after breaking through security barriers to take photos with the Kilauea volcano, which began erupting in May.

According to Interfax, trespassers now face up to a year in prison for entering a restricted area near an erupting volcano, and the fine has increased to $5,000.

Tourists dreaming of capturing lava flows should weigh all the risks. The molten lava moves at high speed and emits toxic fumes. Lava spatter is extremely heavy, and even a small fragment can kill.
